Yes, gang, there's a Lackawanna B-unit in Scranton, DL&W 664B. At today's work session the gray paint was sprayed and some masking removed. Tomorrow, Monday, the black paint gets sprayed, the last of the masking is removed and the unit is finished for travel.

Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning Steamtown crews will put the A-B-A set together for the trip to Spencer. Plans are for the Delaware-Lackawanna to take the A-B-A set to the NS at Portland, Pa., on Tuesday, when NS will move the set to Allentown where it's supposed to meet Erie 833 and Reading 284 from Boonton. If the timing works, the four cabs will then ferry to Harrisburg where it is hoped they will join New Haven 2019 and the Pan Am F-units, then all of those will travel behind one NS locomotive to Spencer. Should be an interesting-looking special. With luck, facebook and the web should be alive with cab-units convening on Spencer, North Carolina.

As for that number on the Lackawanna B-unit: Since umler isn't friendly toward alpha-numeric equipment identifications, the reporting mark on the fuel tank and the umler tags is ARRX 665. The painted number on the carbody side is 664 and the small numbers painted on the frame will be 664B in keeping with Lackawanna lettering practice. The paint on the B-unit is from Dupont, the colors matched to the EMD paint chips for the NS Heritage Locomotive program, and they are now available in the Dupont Imron line so that future preservationists can simply ask for the NS Heritage colors. That's great news.

And, in regards to the installation of the beautifully rebuilt compressor on the 663, we didn't. With the roof hatch off allowing more light into the carbody, close inspection found that the main generator is also worn out, that it is consuming itself. It needs to be rebuilt or replaced, and we're already looking at several options. We'll report on them as they go. There are D12 generators around, and while this set back may cost some time and money there's no better place than Scranton to do this work.

Meanwhile, Monday afternoon we should see our dream of an A-B-A set of Lackawanna F3s, so watch the internet for photos. This is an exciting time for us all, and the great fruition of a lot of hard work by a lot of hard-working people.

Thanks to all who contributed or helped in any way. There's still more work to do, but for now let's enjoy the sights of the biggest gathering of cab units in our lifetimes.

The photo shows Rich Jahn removing some of the crumbs from the numerals on engineer's side.
