Chuck, Bob, and List,

Attached is a shot taken by my late friend, Ralph Curcio, which shows what
the Gladstone yard looked like on the Sunday after the last run - August 26,
1984. This operation continued for the next 5 weekdays. In this shot, we see
only ex-CNJ GP-40's but Ralph's photos show that the U34-CH's were used in
this service later in the week.

Bob,

I was on the last train to Dover, so I can't verify that from first-hand
information. But if memory serves after nearly 30 years--and I'll be the
first to admit that it may not--I read it in the Block Line. From what I
recall, the crew deadheaded the equipment back to Hoboken, and a few of the
westbound riders were "invited" to take the train back to its origin. I
agree with you that it makes no sense, but that's what I recall.

Chuck

Chuck
I never heard that before, which I would have thought would have been
discussed right after it happened. I hate making up History, 35 years
after
the fact. All the other cars from the evening trains would have also been

in the Gladstone yard, so it doesn't seem plausible to just send one train
back, and with what crew?

There was some debate about what was the "last train" because I believe
the cars for 429 deadheaded back from Gladstone to Hoboken before they
de-energized the catenary, making it the last movement before the DC power
was
shut down forever.
