Subject: DL&W and Erie today...
"DSC_3269_resize.jpg" - image/jpeg, 144543 bytes, 740x1113 (24bit)

Today the wife, daughter and I decided to partake in the wonderful (albeit
hot) weather and ride the new northern extension of NJ Transit's
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system. The northernmost part of the line follows a
West Shore/NYC alignment, but then after reaching Weehawken, the line
follows the combined National Docks line and Erie Weehawken Branch through
to Hoboken. The line ducks under the DL&W (DSC_3269), and then make a HARD
left (DSC_3271) to follow the alignment of the former connector between the
DL&W and Erie that was installed after Erie's passenger operations moved to
Hoboken. Note in this view the right-of-way continues south towards Jersey
City. DSC_3272 shows the view going around that turn, with the former DL&W
Warehouse in Jersey City in the background.

DSC_3277 shows us rolling alongside the DL&W on what used to be the lead
into the DL&W freight yard. The light rail line follows that lead right over
Henderson Street, and then it parallels the "Long Slip" into Hoboken before
crossing it (on a fill) to reach the terminal. This can be seen in DSC_3374
- the long slip appears at the left.

After getting to Hoboken, we had a picnic lunch at the restored pier just
north of the Terminal. The pier is now a wonderful park, but it's biggest
advantage is the ability to allow you to get photos like DSC_3355. Yes,
Hoboken Terminal's ferry slips! (the original ones, that is) This view shows
the work going on with the restoration - the entire north wall is being
replaced, and the northernmost ferry slip is missing its copper façade, but
if all goes according to plan, ferryboats will be arriving/departing from
here in a few years. Can't wait!
