Subject: (erielack) Nicholson Branch

In the forthcoming book "Lackawanna Facilities Vol III" that I did for
Morning Sun there is a shot I took of EL SW9 446 at Foster (Hop Bottom
on all maps and to the rest of the world).

The branch came down a steep grade from the main line and ended at
Foster. Then there was a line that left the branch and went to
Nicholson. I guess you could call it a switchback to Nicholson with the
end of the "tail" at Foster.

There was a lumber yard and feed mill at Nicholson and another feed mill
at Foster. As i recall the EL operated it up to CR but don't remember
after that.

The general terrain sure looks like that around Nicholson but I can't
recall a spot where there was a second track torn out fairly recently as
the photo would suggest. Those FMs were very seldom seen up that way...I
personally never saw any. Perhaps Walt Smith can fill us in. For that
matter Alco RS units seldom got to Binghamton except when snow foulrd up
the west end and power got scattered all over the system. I wonder if
the shot wasn't taken on the "Bloom".
