Could very well be, but can anyone confirm? And why didn't many (any?) other
roads have this useful hatch?

Another theory that's been suggested to me is that Automatic Train Control
equipment was stored back there, but did the DL&W have ATC?

I've attached a shot showing the hatch on both DL&W and Erie units. It
appears that Erie 820-823 (the first ones delivered, and the ones that
initially had the lower wings on the nose) did *not* have this hatch when
delivered, but were later retrofitted with them.
