List,

This current issue of the Diamond has an article I wrote: "A Bridge Too
Far". Those who receive the Diamond First Class should have received it.

Attached are three images which will help you to further understand the
complicated straightening of the Buffalo River which caused the DL&W to
construct two lift bridges. Due to space limitations they could not be
included.

(Cap 3) Wye Embankment - This raised embankment was to eliminate the grade
crossing over Abbotts Corners Road (later South Park Avenue). In the
distance at the upper left is the original 1882 Pratt truss bridge. The
Transfer House is to the rear of the photographer. Abbey Street is built on
trestles over a flood run-off channel. The embankment caused a rerouting of
Abbey Street. (9-27-1900 David Fahmer Collection)

(Cap #11) New Track Plan - This drawing was prepared by the D.L.&W. and
shows the new elevated tracks and wye. The New Abbey Street was diverted to
the east of the embankment. All the structures on old Abbey Street and Dyer
Street would soon be demolished and the new York State Steel Company (later
Republic Steel) would occupy all the lands on both sides of the mainline. A
new Transfer House was built in East Buffalo Yard in 1904. (1-26-1907
Steamtown National Historic Site)

(Cap #2) Channel Map - This map shows the original serpentine route of the
Buffalo River and the new straightened channels which were excavated. The
new lift bridges for the Upper and Lower crossings were built over dry land
and the new channels excavated under them.
