Anders & List,

The question was posed: When was the last remaining units (f3s)
repainted...?

I do not have a definitive answer on this but maybe I can offer up some
clues.

49 Years ago, June 8, 1963 to be precise, the Railroad Enthusiasts ran a
trip on the EL from Hoboken to Northumberland. This trip made a stop at
Madison where I boarded.

It was a 17 car train with F3 8411, GP7 1405, F3B 8452 and F3 8431. My
memory is that the 8411 was in very fresh paint and the attached pictures
seem to bear that out. The 8431 is clean in these shots but still carries
the DL&W lettering.

So it is very possible that the last F3 repaint took place around May 1963
and the unit getting the facelift was the 8411 (ex DL&W 801-A).

Shot 1 shows the train pulling into Madison. Shots 2 thru 4 are taken in
Scranton where a gondola (maybe two?) was added. The remaining shots were
taken on photo stops along the branch. This includes a stop at a little rail
museum that I think is now long defunct. I do not remember the locations
along the branch but I'm sure others will help with this.

At the time, the trip was a big disappointment to me as the promised power
was Trainmasters and they were my favorite power by far. Maybe that was just
a rumor but that was what I expected. If I could go back, I would have a
much better attitude!
