I don't recall being able to see the trains from the race track ---(1/2
mile dirt- harness racing, Joie Chitwood thrill shows, midget autos - A.
J. Foyt in dirt track cars!)--- and the grandstand faces the wrong way,
but the attached image shows the proximity of the two at Little Valley,
NY ca. 1955. I added some title info(red) to the scan of a photocopy of
an aerial photo I came across in researching my layout. "Home" for me
was my grandmother's house next door to the County Buildings. (Sold and
demolished for county expansion in 1965.) Back of that property was the
RoW of the Erie /EL . I remember occasional trains, but by '63-65 VERY
few. The Erie used to serve Cattaraugus Cutlery, Borden's, a feed mill
across from the station, a lumber yard (which was most of the traffic I
remember in the 60's) , and I believe an equipment dealer. Old
newspapers tell the tale that heavy snow stranded a train here in 1855-
with Abe Lincoln aboard. Who or what else came to this small town on the
Erie RR I can only guess....
