FYI

Upon return from Spencer, NC where the ABA set of Lackawanna F3s were
certainly a big hit, CMO Rich Jahn issued the following report. Note, this
deals with the ARHS 664A and 664B, Not, Tri States 663A which has it's own
needs, where its generator is now going bad. This after just having its
compressor rebuilt, but not yet installed. I've heard random figures
concerning a generator, rangeing from 7-11 K .

This is not a beg letter, just a reality check for everyone out there that
loves to see, listen to, and photography one of the best looking ABA set of
F units in the world. I will say this. When it comes to these units,
both organizations are surviving on donations, not membership dues, which
wouldn't come anywhere close to being able to paint and operate a set of 65
year old historic diesels. Some give in man hours of labor, but there are
other ways if that's not your thing.

Attached are a few of the reasons why over 9 thousand people came to
Spencer, NC last week to see, listen to, and photograph.

Bob

PS. With out his name being placed back under the side cab window, Mike
Miterko was certainly looking down from heaven all weekend with a big
smile on his face, with the self satisfaction that he played a big part in
getting 663 saved. Ironically, his 92 year old Mom was placed on the do not
resuscitate list yesterday at Mountain Side Hospital, in Summit.

Hi everyone,

For those who don't already know - the locomotives and several of us had a
great couple weeks in North Carolina and the event itself was spectacular
complete with great weather!

I'm going to try to summarize some things while they are still fresh:

The locomotives will be back at Steamtown tonight - I will meet with Will
tomorrow to do the required inspection for return to park service (per the
permit).
They performed at NCTM without incident and the transport down and back was
expedited by NS and the DL. We were treated well by both railroads.

With the cooperation of the folks at NCTM (Don Smith, Robin ? , Jerry
Sheppardson) I was able to spend a day and a half touching up the paint on both
664 and 664B. The rusted roof spots and exposed primer paint on 664 was
painted over with coat of gray paint. The overspray paint problems on the
664B was largely taken care of. Metal replica builders plates were mounted on
both units and all the proper porthole sashes were installed. The
locomotive now at least looks complete on the exterior.

NCTM refueled 664A before departure and Craig, Walt, and I checked and
oiled the oil filled roller bearings on the B unit.

Plenty of questions were fielded about the mechanical condition of the B
unit. Previously, I was using best guess estimates for what it needed to be
operational. Today I made some inquiry's to get actual numbers - this is
what I have:

Lube oil $15.57/gal x 225 gal = $3425.
UTEX governor - $1800.
UTEX water pump - $460. (need two)= $920.
Rebuilt injector - $95.00 need 16 = $1520.
Various Gaskets = $500.
Starting batteries = $5000.
Air compressor rebuild = $3000.

Red indicates estimates.

Years ago when I was an employee of Chevron I was able to get a donation of
lube oil from them. I contacted them again today as a retired employee to
see if they can help. That is a big item on this list so keep your fingers
crossed. The governor is about $1000 less than I expected so that is good
news. The gaskets water pumps and injectors can be done piecemeal as
donation come in. The compressor can be done in place in the shop. All in all this
is not too terrible.
Steve can you make June 21 at Scranton. Joe DeFazio will be there to go
over the electrical connections inn the cabinet and maybe test the MU.

Needs for 664A - it has a minor radiator leak that needs to be addressed
after this year operating season. If the CF7 radiator sections are the same
then we have a replacement core available. It also needs a number of new
gaskets on the accessory end to reduce the amount of oil on the #3 traction
motor. These would be the same gaskets as I listed for the B unit above.

FA2 is going to get the windshields and other cab glass installed. It also
needs a revised hand brake. I talked with Doyle McCormack and Bobb Losse at
Spencer and we have a plan as we all move forward with our Alco cab units.

TriSate is working on a repair plan for 663 that begins as soon as it gets
back to the Scranton shop - more later on that.

There is probably more but this is all I can remember at the moment

Kir - we need to have a better photo section on the ARHS website for our
locomotives and in particular their recent trip to Spencer. I will work with
you - tell me a date.

Rich
