Subject: Knox mine disaster 78 years before

A few weeks back there was some discussion over the Jan 1959 Knox Mine
Disaster when they tunneled into the Susquehanna river. The urban
legend is that it flooded all the mines ending Anthracite business in
NePa. We know that the flooding was actually limited to the immediate
area and by that time most of the mines were already flooded because of
the cost of pumping and the environmental damage caused by the
discharges.

Take a look at the attached pages from the Pa Mine Inspection of 1880
(top of page 169). I'm sorry I didn't scan the name of the inspector
making the narrative report but his concerns are prophetic. Perhaps
this is the source, or documentation of the thinking of people in the
area that mine interconnections could lead to a disaster if the
Susquehanna or Lackawanna rivers were breached.
