On Friday, July 1, 1977, since I got out of work early and knew the Sussex Branch

was in the process of being ripped up, I went looking to find how far along the work was.

The branch was being removed from Netcong north (railroad west) and I found they almost

reached Cranberry Lake by the time they quit for the week. These photos were take at and

near South Shore Road in Byram Township, which was just before where the line skirtted

Cranberry Lake.

Ken,

Abandoned

Hear now the litany: The Sussex Branch was abandoned in two sections:
North of Andover Junction ceased passenger Service on July 14, 1966.
This means that the last passenger train served Branchville on July 10
and Newton on July 13.

From Andover to Netcong was 'abandoned' as far as passenger service on
October 3 giving Andover its last passenger train on October 2.

The rails were removed in 1967 from Andover Junction to Branchville. A
few interchange trains seem to have ventured to Andover Junction until
at least 1968 (dated photo.)

The rails from Netcong to Andover Junction were finally removed summer
of 1977.
