Paul is referring to the fact that the New Jersey Midland Railroad
Historical Society has been working with Allamuchy Township to restore the
former Lehigh & Hudson River freight house. FDR's private car, the
Ferdinand Magellan, was parked facing eastbound (the way we are looking in
this photo) at this freight house in 1944. There are photos showing the
White House press corps sitting on the platform with FDR, err, "visited"
Lucy Mercer Rutherford at the Rutherford mansion about a mile away.

The freight house was being used by a local farmer (yes we still have farms
in NJ!) to receive feed until Conrail abandoned the line in 1986.
Eventually the town hopes to put in a section of track next to the station
and place a 40 ft. boxcar on it. The Mayor would like to rebuild the
passenger station which was to the right of the freight house but
disassembled after pasenger service ended here in 1933.

To tie this back to the EL, I have found waybills showing supplies for
building the Cutoff being delivered to Allamuchy. Johnsonburg station on
the DL&W was about 5 miles from here. In the late 1920's the Lackawanna
actively attracted milk business to Johnsonburg and Greendell on the Cutoff
as well as to the Sussex Branch, specifically targeting farmers using the
L&HR. The sharp decline in this business played a large part in ending
passenger service between Belvidere and Warwick on the L&HR in 1933.
