Pat,

The Atlas car is pretty accurate. The only issue that I see is that the two
Atlas cars I have are 12014 and 12060,
numbers for non-DF cars, but they have DF lettering on the doors.

I know you are a "panel-counter", and the Atlas cars appear to be correct as
16-panel cars, unlike the Accurail cars, which are 12-panel.
I don't know that either are exactly right end-wise, but both are close
enough for me, and I can live with the panel discrepancy.

The most obvious issue with the Accurail car is the 8' standard Youngstown
door, instead of a 9' Youngstown door with a wide border.
I bought three of these cars before looking into them more completely.

I sat on them until Kadee released the correct doors as part #2246. These
are boxcar red.
I replaced the Atlas doors with the Kadee doors so they correctly have no DF
lettering, and the color is close.

The Accurail cars are numbered 12087, which would be DF cars, so two of them
received the Atlas doors with DF lettering,
(one to be appropriately renumbered with Accurail decals, and the third car
will get unlettered Kadee doors and be renumbered with a lower number.

I have attached a photo showing Accurail cars before and after the door
swap.
I know the Kadee door is darker than Accurail's typical "faded" paint job,
but I think some weathering will help this.
(The Atlas doors are likewise too dark on the Accurail cars, and need some
weathering.)

I then painted the roofs silver, and ends black, on the Accurail cars, which
really made a difference too.
I am working on making some decals to reletter the black ends, using photos
of the ends of the Atlas cars as a starting point.

I think the Atlas cars look great with their new doors.
I know we can find lots of faults with the Accurail cars, but they are
inexpensive, and for a few bucks I think they can be made to look
acceptable.

IMG_1 compares basically stock Accurail cars with original door vs Kadee
door.
IMG_2 and IMG_3 compare Atlas car with Kadee door to painted Accurail car
with Atlas door.
IMG_4 shows the two Atlas cars and three Accurail cars.

Still building the Branchline 66000-series EL gray versions.

Thanks,
Joe
