The attached shot of Conrail/NJDOT 1776 was taken on July 4, 1976.

I rode in from Morris Plains on an MU that day to see Op Sail. I’m not sure if I knew then that it was the debut of the new paint scheme but it was a nice surprise.

Has the story of the rail operations that day ever been written up? The day began as a disaster with over-crowding but they did recover.
