This Lackawanna Railroad bridge (See photo) near Elmira could be restored as walking path and rail trail extended.

From the Star Gazette

Elmira City Council will be asked next week to support a grant application for a project that's part of the creation of the Lackawanna Trail.
This is an opportunity to pursue the next link in the trail so it will ultimately extend from Eldridge Park to the Lowman Crossover, said Andy Avery, commissioner of public works for the city and Chemung County.
The application through the state Environmental Protection Fund would be in the range of $200,000 or less to restore the old Lackawanna-Delaware railroad bridge to be used as a connection between the county and city portions of the trail, he said.
Funding also would be used to create a trail section between the city's ending point and the bridge, he told City Council earlier this week.
The reason for the urgency of council action is that the application is due July 16, Avery said.
The grant requires a 50 percent local match that will be split evenly between the city and the county.
"Even though the city is the owner of the bridge, the county recognizes that without that bridge, their trail doesn't get used," he said.
Council members are to vote on endorsing the grant application when they meet at 7 p.m. Monday on the second floor of Elmira City Hall, 317 E. Church St.
Also Monday, the council will vote on accepting a maximum bid of $22,323 by Tri County Fence of Elmira for a 5-foot-tall fence to replace a wooden barrier between Wegmans and Clemens Center Parkway.
The barrier was removed in anticipation of constructionof the Lackawanna Trail.
A fence must be put back in place as per state Department of Transportation requirements to protect trail users from the highway environment of Clemens Center Parkway, Avery said.
"It will be an aluminum fence, but it will look like ornamental wrought iron painted black, a decorative fence," he said.
It will extend from Division Street to the right-turn-in, right-turn-out entrance to the Wegmans parking lot, he said.
