Here's an image of an Erie Extra, hauled by N-1 3143, and running on the
Central New Jersey. To the rear is D&H's MO (Mineral Springs) Tower.
Besides the D&H main, MO also controlled access to the Lehigh Valley's
Mineral Springs Branch.

MO Tower was located near Wilkes-Barre. Unlike Carbondale, the Erie didn't
have running rights on this section of the D&H. An Erie freight train
operating from Susquehanna to Ashley would run down the Jefferson Division
to Carbondale. It would then run on the D&H from Carbondale to Langcliffe
Jct and enter the Erie's Wyoming Division to yard its train at Avoca. The
train would leave Avoca and continue on Erie tracks to Plains Jct. where
trackage rights on the CNJ were used for the rest of the trip.

The Erie trackage rights on the CNJ allowed for interchange freight traffic
between Erie's Avoca Yard and the CNJ's Ashley Yard. From Pains Jct. the
Erie ran on the CNJ Canal Branch to Miners Mills. After crossing the D&H at
grade at Miners Mills the Canal Branch connected to the CNJ's former L&S
main line. The Erie then had rights on the main line into Ashley. The Erie
also had rights on an alternate routing from Gardner's Switch, located
between Miners Mills and MO Tower, running on the CNJ's Nanticoke Branch to
Ashley yard.

Using each line in only one direction allowed Erie trains to effectively
run in a loop, eliminating the need to turn the engine or run in reverse
for the return trip to Avoca.
