Erie caboose on the loose: Norfolk Southern picked up restored Erie C330
this afternoon and it's currently in Allentown. Witness these pictures of
it on a main line freight train taken by Chris Schanbacher, Allentown
yardmaster, as the crew arrived just 15 minutes under the 12-hours. These
images have the feel of the early 1960s Port Jervis. In the close shot,
those LPG tank cars with the high walkways were very common in the 1960s,
as were those ACF covered hoppers. We owe a great thanks to the Black River
& Western for moving the car to the interchange ahead of trackwork and a
big Day Out With Thomas event, and NS for the quick pick-up that got it to
Allentown.

Plans are to move it on the H74 to Washington on Sunday. The crew is
on-duty at 7:30 a.m.. It usually follows the H76 out, usually somewhere
between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. bound for Washington. If all goes well, the H-02
out of Dover will pick it up Sunday evening for the trip to Lake Junction.

The trip between Easton and Washington is at 10 mph, gang, so it's a free
photo freight. The tracks stay within sight of Route 57 for most of the
way, so it's an easy chase. Bring the kids and a camera. And share your
photos. This caboose may have traveled these very rails early in the 1960s.
The caboose was purchased and restored by Mark D. Krisanda
, and it's been in excursion
service on the Black River & Western. The caboose is now part of the
Tri-State Chapter NRHS collection and it will reside in Whippany on the
Morristown & Erie. It's much closer to home rails and it'll see a lot of
service. Pictures of it on the Washington Secondary will be rare, so enjoy
and be safe.
