Joshua,

In May of 1894 the Lackawanna made arrangements with the NYC to lease up to
100 hard-coal locomotives. There was a shortage of soft coal due to labor
problems, but apparantly hard coal was available.

After the Panic of 93 hit in June, Vanderbilt (and his co-horts) secretly
bought up Lackawanna stock. By October they had secured a large block, and
in February of 1894 elected three directors to the DL&W Board of Managers.
This began an era of cooperation between the DL&W and NYC.

Attached is the news clipping from the Buffalo Express, dated 5-19-1894. It
is a little difficult to read.
