Subject: Layout photos - "sort of"
"port-morris-east.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1200x809 (24bit)

Following up on Paul Brezicki's layout photos, here are some shots of my
"layout"... sort of. Let me explain...

I used my CAD application to print out a full-size version of the Port
Morris track plan that I posted here a few weeks ago. This is where a
CAD application can be a really useful tool - I taped together all those
sheets of paper and put them on the ground, and placed real equipment on
the printed tracks to verify intertrack spacing and clearances on
curves. Good thing I did! I messed up on my calculations in CAD on the
double-track curve and the 89' pig flats would just barely touch cars on
the adjacent track. Not good!

I went back and readjusted the curves in CAD to have a bit wider
spacing, and also tweaked some of the easement curves, and printed out
the modified sections. This time, the spacing was correct (see
"curve-clearance.jpg" for an overhead shot of the former problem area).
To help inspire me to finally construct the benchwork (once I haul out
all the garbage in that part of the basement!), I set up a sample ES-99
passing the Port Morris tower with a non-descript eastbound pig train
passing it. On the side, a GP35 on the Dover Drill (yeah, that rarely
happened, but I haven't painted up any of my GP7s yet :) sets out cars
in the Port Morris yard. The empty track at the edge is the "Old Road"
headed towards Netcong and Washington. "port-morris-west.jpg" looks from
the west end of the yard (don't those easements into that curve look
good?), while "port-morris-east.jpg" looks from the east end of the
yard.

Moral of this story: Make sure when track planning you get all the
curves right, and if at all possible, test with the equipment you will
be running!

- Paul
