Thursday, Sept 21:

EB Fleet:

PO-98: Big 95 car train with its customary D&H and PO blocks out of GN, and
add cars (for same blocks) to each end at HF. Although it's a regular
operation, it doesn't appear in the schedule/classification books, so I'm
not sure if "DH" includes B&M's, in which case the D&H block will need to be
classified by D&H at either Binghamton or Oneonta. Do you know, Steve? OTOH,
TC-100 is preblocked for D&H and B&M, as you see below. PO-98 will p/u
interchange from D&H at Binghamton, mostly paper products, including
newsprint, for New York.

PB-100: No car count or tonnage. Dp 45" late, it looks like partly because
of engine change due to inbound E8 814 "had trouble with PC switch"; Steve,
what's the PC switch? Also not clear if both engines changed or just one.

NY-100: Dp close behind 15" AOS with short 34 car train at 3.1 hpt. s/o 3
cars for RC-98, p/u 3 CX. May not refuel due to SDP45's with 5000 gal tank

TC-100: looks to be about OT with mostly B&M that will be classified at
Mech'ville NY, 15 D&H proper (greater Albany, Whitehall, Rouses Pt) and 16
Bingo, including S&U cars. Power is the pair of D&H C628's that came west on
Tuesday with PB-99. They arrived CO Wed morning, made a quick turnaround,
back out at 1400 that afternoon with TC-100. Good power utilization.

SFE-100: at least 2 hr late, this is a fairly hot train that I'm assuming
would normally get an ID crew at GN, but cc at Kent indicates no ID crew
available at GN. No refuel due to U33C and SDP45.

CBE (NYCB): 26 cars, not much shorter than NY-100 today. Close to OT, due HF
at 1755, engine change.

2/NY-100: OT or better today at GN, no refuel due to SDP45's

PN-98: looks like OT Dp GN

WB Fleet:

TC-99: Dp HF 80" AOS, big 112 car train, op via Y'town rather than customary
2nd district, no reason given. Steve, do you think to avoid meets with 3
sections of 100 on 2nd dist?

BM-7: ar HF 1 hr late and classify

CBW (SLCB): Running ahead of 99 for a change and nearly 1 hr AOS with 3.5
hpt

NY-99: Biggest TOFC train we've seen so far with 75 loads (includes some
forwarder boxcars), running about 20" AOS with 1.9 hpt

SC-99: 35" AOS with a C424 dit from Scranton. The 1972 schedule shows SC-99
running through to GN. In 1971 and prior, this train was a hotshot, running
thru to CO on a 33 hr schedule from Scranton. By 1973, it terminated at HF
although frequently ran through to GN as req.

PB-99: 15" late at V with decent train of 35 loads (cab always appears as an
empty). Today the 5 GN are indeed taken off at HF; p/u 3 Chicago pigs.
Engine change at HF (see note bottom of page)

CX-99: big 66 car train, over 4000 tons, OT at V. No fuel (pair of SDP45's)
but the GP35 will get a 5" fueling at UK so it can make it to CO

NY-97: big 112 car train, looks like 90" late at V, relatively small no. of
autoracks (6, vs 9 yesterday), 7 Clevelands and balance GN. Change power at
HF; does 2459 in parentheses indicate dit?

BM-9: preblocked at Bison with 9 BRC, 39 GN, 33 Lima

PO-87: taking D&H cab 201 to HF carshop

NE-97: will be dp PO about 1 hr late with a long train of mostly empties.

Steve's comments:

PO-98. Not sure either Paul.. That changed from time to time.

PB-100. PC Switch is the Power Control contacts. It must be closed to
provide power from the main generator to the traction motors. If open, the
engine runs and the MG develops electricity but it can't go to the TM.
Works like the Generator Field Switch. Engineer can open the Generator
Field switch and the same thing happens. It's a relay in the high voltage
cabinet behind the engine crew.

SFE-100 Sometimes this train does work along the way and occasionally,
like today, uses a divisional crew.

TC-99 Yes, probably due to EB traffic on the single track. If the delay
at Transfer or Johnsons would be over 30 minutes, the train would go via
first district----IF the crew was qualified and if the main track was not
blocked somewhere with a drag, hoppers, or another train. (Note--Some
Marion crews were not qualified via the first district--you had to choose
your poison.)

PB-99 Note that Jim shows at the bottom of the turnover, that PB-99 runs
west of HF with 3646 and 7122.

CX-99 would have gotten a quick shot of fuel at UK.

NY-97 (2459)----parentheses always mean the unit was off line---not
loading, overdue for inspection, dead, etc.

PO-87 That DH cab (#201??) was on train BM-9. Note that Jim improvised
there with the ////////

My comments---

AV-BR Turn--big train--119 ore for Hazelton Furnace. Back to CD
lite---remember boat due today.

BR-SP Turn--another big train---130 J&L hoppers. This would be a train of
hoppers from J&L Aliquippa Works that went to P&LE loaded several days ago.

XN Turn with cars for Greenville (EL industries) XN (B&LE interchange) and
pick up at Ferrona. Turns from XN with 42 Youngstown coke due about
midnight. That would be for USS-Ohio Works from Clairton Coke Plant on URR.

Another local move--STA moving cars between Brier Hill and Ferrona, changing
out an engine--recall that 1044 was dead at New Castle yesterday. Goes to
DO shop.

Steamer Goebel working at the River Terminal dock. 170 Warren ore to come
to us via N&SS at Newburg Yard. (Lot of work to get trains out of
Newburg--in addition to shoving over road crossings).

Note that Jim says will call a Randall Turn with "separated" hoppers--J&L
and others. Due to restrictions at the J&L Aliquippa dumper, they could NOT
accept: NYC 858xx and 889xx-series hoppers, nor NKP 34xxx series hoppers
nor ANY EL goldstripes---32xxx and 33xxx series. (you had to know these
things---some mills had "specialty" restrictions as far as loading. If you
loaded the wrong cars, you'd have to answer for it.)

Next boat at RB (River Bed--EL dock) Steamer Reiss (again) at noon on the
22nd---Topper boat, which means that the boat stops at RB and unloads about
70 to 100 cars of ore to lighten the load, then to the River Terminal dock
to unload the balance for Republic Steel in Cleveland or would come to EL
via N&SS Newburg for Warren or Hazelton Fce---but most likely-_Risco at
Cleveland.

Another GN-HF extra coming tonight. Could be more coal for Buffalo.

Busy day on the Mahoning Divn.
