I wish I could do as good with the PC as with the locomotives........My uncle
gave me an Argus C-3 ayear or 2 after I hired out, first time I'd SEEN a 35
mm camera.I used to put it in my grip. I realize now that I didn't know about
how to compose a foto, but I was 'on the spot' for some rare stuff. I'll try
& send one as an attachment. It's a foto of tne Cortland local in the siding
at Homer, NY waiting for BS 51 to go by on the former DL&W Syracuse Division.
We're in the siding & I got on the ground to record events. I took a 4
shot series, but this one's the middle shot & shows our engine with Norm
Orcutt (chewtobacco) in the cab looking on. As BS51 approaches, Bill Smith,
the headman, is on the ground to give the runby inspection. The Homer
passenger station is in the background as well as a typical DL&W
building...the gateman's shanty on a pillar at the left of the road crossing.
Across the tracks & on the other side of the crossing is the old freight
station. At this point in time, (mid-60s) the mainline from Cortland to Homer
was double tracked.
Orcutt (chewtobacco) was a good engineer but loved his plug of
tobacco. I was looking over the engine before leaving one day & found a note
from the shop guys,"HEY NORM, WATCH THE TOBACCO JUICE". Several times, I'd
find my hand sticking to the automatic brake or the throttle.
Regards,
Walt Smith
