I am the proud owner of the headlight off of the 1140, and it resides in my DL Scranton General Supt’s office. I purchased this over 30 years ago in an antique shop in Clarks Summit. When an engine had its # plate background painted red it was an assigned locomotive. This locomotive must have been assigned to Ben and then someone else for the next 25 years, ending up in commuter service on the Boonton line in 1953

The lettering on the engine cab shows he hired in 1871 ! Photos at Hoboken, 1928. The train is unidentified, but it was probably a Main Line train, in which case old Ben would have been running over the twenty miles of 1.6% grade on the Pocono Mountains, to Scranton.

The 1140 was the last Pacific built for the DL&W, American Locomotive Works, 1923. The Mountains started arriving the following year, 1924. These Pacifics sported 79" drivers, carried 210 psi boiler pressure when delivered, weighed 191,000 on drivers, exerted 39,430 pounds of T.E., and were hand fired. The 1140 overturned on August 17, 1942, while handling a Branchville passenger train. She lasted until 1953.

Oh, to have spent a day with old Ben and heard his stories !
