"UPOlympic5.jpg" - image/jpeg, 323767 bytes, 1136x852 (24bit)

Hi folks,

Today I had an interesting lunch break with fellow railfan Frank
Etzel. In Jersey City, we managed to somehow catch a southbound CSX
stack train running down the recently rebuilt (quite nicely!) ex-Erie
Northern Branch. The interesting thing was that the train was being led
by three UP SD70Ms, with the first unit being one of UP's two
blue-painted Salt Lake City Winter Olympic commemorative units!
UPOlympic4.jpg shows the train approaching, passing the large North
Jersey USPS sorting facility (And yes, the siding in the foreground is
to an active consignee!). UPOlympic5.jpg shows the train going away -
the "flyover" bridge used for PC-Susquehanna interchange, as well as KW
Interlocking, is just off in the distance. Note that the Northern is
back to two tracks once again!

Afterwards, we drove down County Road, past Croxton Yard (today
a large NS intermodal facility, but still retaining the original Erie
yard light towers!) and across to the engine facility. A pair of NS
C40-9Ws were acting as yard switchers today (big switchers!), with NS
9194 at the rear of the two-unit set. The yard seen here is on the east
side of the former Croxton engine facility. Speaking of which... There
is a large "wastepile" covered with black tarps (I assume to keep the
water from leeching any toxic chemicals further into the ground. For
those folks who were on the Croxton Discovery Day so many years ago,
don't you all feel great that we traipsed around this lovely little
toxic field? :)

We then swung around the industrial park west of the yard to see
the new connection NJT put in between HX Draw and the east side of the
DL&W lift bridge over the Hackensack. It's essentially a mile-long,
3-foot-high trestle over the swampland there, an impressive piece of
engineering. The former Erie between Harmon Cove and the south end of
Croxton is no more, and completely ripped up.

Finally, we decided to get lunch at White Castle (yum!) in
Hasbrouck Heights. As we were driving under the Erie, an NS local was
headed east with a nice sized train (including several NY&GL boxcars).
In a matter of about 90 minutes, we saw all this, all around former EL
lines. Not too shabby, actually!

- Paul
