Subject: Short vacation with unexpected surprises...

Hi all,

Yikes! I returned from a 3-day vacation to Pittsburgh with my
wife (to go to the National Historic Landmark-status Kennywood Amusement
Park), and found almost 100 messages to read on this list. Wow!

On the way out to Pittsburgh, I took my wife (who I now call "my
lucky charm," as you'll soon see) to see Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA.
We only stayed for a few minutes, but the one train we saw turned out to
be lucky. An eastbound freight behind three NS C40-9W diesels came into
view, and the second car was EL 3-bay hopper #33660! What are the odds
the the only train we stayed to see at the curve would have this car,
almost head-out??? See the attached photos for proof... :) My wife
doesn't quite understand the significance, but that's OK. :)

We also did a quick drive around town, and the 71000-series 40'
EL boxcar is STILL on the south side of the yard (and the little yard
that it's sitting in is getting slowly overgrown by weeds and trees).

As an aside, while we were at Kennywood, while on line for the
"Phantom's Revenge" rollercoaster, we saw - simultaneously - a Union RR
switch job and NS stack train on our side of the Monongahela River, and
a CSX coal train, USX ("US Steel") hot metal switcher, and NS
merchandise freight on the other side of the river. I've been to
Kennywood 7 times now, and have never seen more than two trains
simultaneously. Like I said, she's my lucky charm! :)

Now to read the rest of the mail...

- Paul
