Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 3

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

In 1933-34, both the Erie and the DL&W decided to elevate their tracks through Elmira to reduce
the number of at-grade crossings. This series of shots is an Erie overpass on the south side
of Elmira (specifically - Henry Street). Nearly all of the Erie overpasses are perpendicular
to the streets (with the exception of the Pennsylvania Ave. overpass) as opposed to the DL&W
overpasses which are nearly all at a 45 degree angle to the streets (with the exception of the
E. Church St. overpass - which, sadly no longer exists since it has been razed to make room for
the entrance ramp to the future I-86). Compare the construction shown here with the previous
set of photos for the DL&W. Personally, I liked the DL&W ones better than the Erie ones.

erie01.jpg - this wide-angle shot looks east toward the overpass.
erie02.jpg - this shot shows the arrangement of the arches holding up the overpass.
erie03.jpg - this shot shows the detail of the railing on top of the overpass.
erie04.jpg - this is another shot of the center arches.
erie05.jpg - this shot details the arches separating the pedestrian walk from car traffic.
erie06.jpg - this shot shows the detail of the date in the center of the overpass.
erie07.jpg - this shot also shows the detail of the date in the center of the overpass.
erie08.jpg - this shot shows the detail of the pedestrian walkway.
