Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 4
"c-pp07.jpg" - image/jpeg, 48531 bytes, 563x862 (24bit)

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

The subject of this series of photos is the restored DL&W depot in Painted Post, NY. The depot
was restored in 1999 by the Corning-Painted Post Historical Society after having been owned by
a construction company for the previous 20+ years. The inside had suffered extensive damage
from a fire but has been completely restored. It is used as a museum that covers a lot of the
history of the surrounding area. It does have a section about the depot and the railroads it
serviced. There were some factual errors in their railroad history that I think the ELHS could
help them out with, if anyone is interested.

The depot was positioned on the south side of the DL&W row with the long dimension east-west.

c-pp01.jpg - This shot shows the sign in front of the depot.
c-pp02.jpg - This shot shows the south and east side of the depot.
c-pp03.jpg - This shot details the roof peak on the east end of the depot.
c-pp04.jpg - This shot details the bay window on the north side of the depot. Note: the
handicap ramp on the left was not originally part of the depot :-).
c-pp05.jpg - This shot details the freight door on the north side of the depot. Note: the
modern central air and heating equipment are disguised as shipping crates on either side of
this door.
c-pp06.jpg - This shot details the freight door on the south side of the depot.
c-pp07.jpg - This shot details the date of the restoration of the depot. These are the stairs
to the south passenger entrance to the depot.
c-pp08.jpg - This shot details the date that DL&W replaced the original stone foundation with a
concrete foundation.
c-pp09.jpg - This shot details the west end of the depot near the roof peak.
c-pp10.jpg - This shot details the overhang of the roof (north-west corner).
c-pp11.jpg - This shot details the roof supports on the north side of the depot.
c-pp12.jpg - This is a shot of something on the north side of the depot (track side) positioned
between the passenger door and the bay window. Does anyone know what this is?.
c-pp13.jpg - This shot shows the west end of the depot. Note the disguised equipment to the
left.
c-pp14.jpg - This shot down the south side of the station details the roof supports.
c-pp15.jpg - This shot details the passenger section of the north side of the depot.

We didn't get a good shot of the east side of the depot so here's a link to the one in the
Existing Railroad Stations in New York State website:
http://ny.existingstations.com/archive/180.jpg

The curator said that this depot was constructed from a standard kit. The interior wood
support framing was brought in and the rest of the station was constructed from local material.

I believe the layout of the DL&W depot in Big Flats is the same as this depot. However, it got
moved and I couldn't find it to verify this.

BTW: are the colors of this depot DL&W colors?

More to come...
