Ken,

Train 59 did indeed detour via the Main Line during the PATH strike. I
don't recall the exact year; 1973 sounds right. I don't think it was
because of freight operations, but I think it was due to train 1257, a
Bergen County local which departed at 5:54, making all stops to Waldwick.
Attached are a few shots of 59 going through Passaic while detouring.

Regards,

Vinnie

and faster. The late night through train did it because there were no
passengers to pick up. Middletown was probably an operational stop. There
may have been other stops not noted in public timetables for mail or
express.

Train 59, left Hoboken at 5:42 p.m. (which I believe is the scheduled time
today, as it was in 1959, adjusted from 5:40 p.m. when the Erie used its
Jersey City terminal), via the Bergen County Line, with its first stop at
Hohokus (Ho-Ho-Kus, to be correct) at 6:11 p.m.. During the PATH strike,
the train was held until 6 p.m. and ran via the Main Line. Since more of
the commuter trains ran over the Main Line, I assumed that it had to do
with freight operations over the Bergen County Line at the end of the
eveing rush. Maybe someone with more familiarity with operations at that
time can clarify this.
