From David Monte Verde...

I have always heard the story that it was named Bridge 60 because it was the 60th bridge from 'oboken? I am enclosing a photo of the wooden bridge that stood at this location. The photo caption refers to the arch under construction . This wooden bridge was replaced with a fill that had a stone arch over "the" D&H and a separate one over the river & CNJ. Why the fill was taken out & replaced with today's steel bridge is another question to ask the 'gods' of time.

Another interesting side note is that the EL thought that there was going to be a lot of mine subsidence around the bridge and in the 60's they placed a crude laser system in place to detect any movement. It seems, as the story goes, the only movement they encountered were pigeons breaking the beams!
