Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 5
"bridge06.jpg" - image/jpeg, 38166 bytes, 864x563 (24bit)

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

The subject of this series of photos is the Erie RR bridge over the Chemung River in Elmira NY.
When the Erie raised the ROW in 1933-1934, they had to build a new bridge across the river. It
was quite busy in its heyday since the LVRR and the PRR/NYC power pool also had trackage rights
over this bridge.

bridge01.jpg - This shot shows the bridge looking at it from the west (upstream) side. Where
the floodwall juts out on the right side of the picture is where the Hygea plant used to be (it
was razed earlier this year). Note that the two middle spans are shorter than the other four
spans (I'm not counting the small seventh span mentioned in bridge04.jpg and bridge05.jpg).
bridge02.jpg - This shot also shows the bridge looking at it from the west (upstream) side from
a slightly different angle.
bridge03.jpg - This shot shows the Chemung Street overpass (which is identical to the Henry St.
one detailed earlier) near the south end of the bridge which wouldn't have been visible if the
Hygea plant was still there. It is fenced off and is no longer used.
bridge04.jpg - This shot details the southern most span of the bridge. It is quite different
from the rest of the spans.
bridge05.jpg - This shot again details southern most span of the bridge.
bridge06.jpg - This shot details one of the footings of the bridge. Note that it is beveled
and angled on this side (the upstream side) and is flat on the other side (as seen in a later
photo).
bridge07.jpg - This shot details the northernmost span of the bridge as it goes over the
floodwall and becomes the elevated section of the track through downtown Elmira (this will be
covered in a later e-mail).
bridge08.jpg - This shot again details one of the footings of the bridge.
bridge09.jpg - This shot details the northernmost footer (as seen from the north end of the
bridge over the floodwall) with the date that it was constructed.
bridge10.jpg - This shot details one of the access ladders to the footings of the bridge on the
east side.
bridge11.jpg - This shot details one of the access ladders to the footings of the bridge on the
west side.
bridge12.jpg - This shot details one of the footings.
bridge13.jpg - This is a shot of the builders plate on the bridge. It's interesting that the
American Bridge Works in Elmira Heights wasn't contracted to construct this bridge.

More to come...
