Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 6

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

The subject of this series of photos is the Erie Elevated track through downtown Elmira NY.
When the Erie raised the ROW in 1933-1934, they elected to elevate the track through downtown
on pillars rather than use fill. The elevated portion starts at the north end of the bridge
covered in the last series of pictures. It extends to just north of Fifth Street before
reaching the Erie Station.

erel01.jpg - This shot shows the southernmost part of the elevated track. This part of the
elevated track resembles the Erie overpass detailed earlier. Note the date is 1934.
erel02.jpg - This shot details where the bridge and concrete structure join. The object
attached to the end of the concrete abutment is a signal light facing south.
erel03.jpg - This shot is looking north along the west side of the elevated track.
erel04.jpg - This shot is looking north from under the elevated track.
erel05.jpg - This shot is looking north along the east side of the elevated track. Note that
the elevated track widens further down.
erel06.jpg - This shot is also looking north along the east side of the elevated track at a
different angle.
