Subject: Steamtown Images--Harlem Transfer
"Harlem_Transfer_042136_Steamtown.jpg" - image/jpeg, 800x622 (24bit)

I agreed that the location of image C1410 as being the Lackawanna's Harlem
Transfer yard in the Bronx seemed somewhat questionable. The further images
have made it plain that it is Harlem Transfer but the church steeple
visible in the distance in C1410 convinced me that the photo was of the
Harlem Transfer yard in the Bronx. I believe that is a Harlem church named
St. Martin's. I found the same steeple visible in a photo from another
website, on trainweb.com, this one having to do with New York City's
waterfront rail terminals. The photo is on the page about Harlem Transfer,
was taken in 1936 and shows the same church steeple in the distance. It is
credited to Steamtown and Pat McKnight so I am taking the liberty of
attaching it.

I was also interested in seeing the saddle tank locomotive visible in
C1412. On the trainweb page there is information about the locomotives that
were assigned to Harlem Transfer and the locomotive in C1412 is undoubtedly
Harlem Transfer No. 1. (If you enlarge the image I think you can see the
numeral 1 on the side of the engine.)

There is a lot of information about this locomotive, plus several photos,
on the trainweb page about Harlem Transfer. This locomotive was built by
Baldwin in 1898, delivered as a steam dummy, with a passenger car-type body
mounted over the locomotive. It looks like an inspection locomotive. Later
the shrouding is removed and the appearance of HT No. 1 changes over the
years. In undated photos on the trainweb site following the shrouding being
removed the locomotive no longer has the clerestory cab roof it had in 1913
when the Bunnell photos were taken.

The trainweb site has tons of information, maps and photos of Harlem
Transfer. Below is a link to the page:
