Subject: DL&W F3 Volunteer -- stripes and strips
"Tri-State_F3_Scranton_8-10-2010_011.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1600x1930 (24bit)

Greetings, gang,

It was a landmark day in Scranton today for DL&W 663 as the last of the masking for the yellow was completed. It was a long haul over four consecutive and hot days for the F-Troop, and thanks to everyone for seeing us through thus far. Wednesday we plan to shoot the yellow. If all goes well and the paint sets up by about lunch time, we'll mask for and shoot the black carbody stripe.

The fall back if we have to is to finish painting either Saturday or early next week at the latest, watching the weather. After a few days under roof to help the paint cure, the locomotive will be moved outdoors to make room for other NPS work. At that location, yet to become firm, we can do some touch up work with brushes and start on some interior items. The screens are going to require touch up -- no matter how we tried, there is no way to mask the chicken wire for a perfect paint line.

And as more NPS staffers join our e-mail list, I'd like to express our extreme gratitude for the hospitality and cooperation of the National Park Service employees. We have made a great many friends at Steamtown, and we've accomplished a lot of great work. These F3s will be a source of pride for everyone, and they've already brought a lot of great press coverage to our favorite National Park. Thanks to all of the employees.

Some photos follow, wish us luck on Wednesday.

....Mike Del Vecchio

All those stripes: Tony Traglia is scuffing some off the paint deep into to the chicken wire. Seven stripes, two sides each, more than 50 feet each, engineer's and fireman's side, comes to more than 1400 feet feet of masking, plus the nose curves, and also the necessary doubling up and layering of the taped lines. Big masking job.

The last of the masking was to create the nose curves. On the carbody sides, all of the lines had a firm landmark on which to base a measurement. On this part of the nose, there is no firm landmark so this had to be done by eye. It turned out well to the approval of all who were there, including two ARHS members who were working on sister 664. In the photo below, Mike Del Vecchio is wiping the grease pencil from the paint on which the tape was positioned. The green masking tape is tackier than the blue, and this roll was only 1/2-inch, since we knew we'd be close to the ventilator. We had the full-size EMD drawing for this curve, made correctly sized copies, cut them out and taped them to the nose, tracing the outline with the grease pencil. The point of the stripe was created from leftover stencil material, cut to the exact curve of the EMD drawing for a perfect point. Even with the drawing, curve had to transition by eye into the horizontal stripe on the carbody. Fasc
inating excersize, this, made comfortable by ten years of graphic design experience. This locomotive was the ultimate paste-board. The area outside of the tape was sanded smooth for a better finish on the yellow paint. Tom Kelcec photo.

While this grab shot isn't exactly straight on, it shows the nose. We've come a long way.
