Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 7

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

The subject of this series of photos is the DL&W skewed through truss bridge over Newtown creek
just east of Elmira. It can be seen from Route 17 (future I-86) just south of the E.Water
Street exit. Since the E.Church Street overpass has been removed, there is no longer any track
using the bridge so it is a matter of time before it is razed (although it is sitting out in
the middle of nothing so it may last a while longer). Does anyone know of any other DL&W
through truss bridge still standing in the southern tier of New York?

dlwbridge01.jpg - This shot shows the bridge as you come upon it...sitting out in the middle of
nowhere. From this vantage, E.Water street is behind you and Route 17 is in the upper left
behind the trees.
dlwbridge02.jpg - This shot is looking south along the abandoned ROW toward the bridge from
under the E. Water Street overpass. There is a dirt access road from the parking lot on the
south side of E. Water Street that you can drive down to get right on the ROW.
dlwbridge03.jpg - This shot details the north end of the bridge. The skew looks like it is
about 45 degrees. This would be an interesting bridge to model. Does anyone know where I can
get some dimensional drawings of this bridge?
dlwbridge04.jpg - This shot details the beams and girders.
dlwbridge05.jpg - This shot is looking northeast from the bridge at the detail on the northeast
corner.
dlwbridge06.jpg - This shot details the deck of the bridge on the northwest end.
dlwbridge07.jpg - This shot details the deck of the bridge on the northeast end.
dlwbridge08.jpg - This shot details the upper construction.

More to come...
