Subject: Harlem Transfer
"DLW_Brooklyn_Terminals.jpg" - image/jpeg, 323x541 (24bit)

If we are seeing Harlem Transfer and the church steeple is in Harlem then
what we are seeing is Brooklyn? Sounds like something got lost in the
translation. As a native of New York City I would say that: A) the Harlem
Transfer yard was located on the north/east shore of the Harlem River which
forms the boundary between the Bronx and Manhattan. B) The Harlem Transfer
yard was located in the southeast Bronx. C) The church steeple is in north
central Manhattan. The closest point in Brooklyn would be to the southeast
and a good five miles away.

Perhaps the confusion is related to the fact DL&W did have two separate
yards in Brooklyn, both reached by carfloat. The first was the Wallabout
Terminal located in north Brooklyn near the Navy Yard. It was located
between the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges, about opposite Manhattan's
Lower East Side. The second yard was further south, at 25th Street in the
Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, south of the Battery, almost due east of
the Statute of Liberty.

I realize for persons unfamiliar with the New York City area this may all
be hard to visualize. Therefore I'm attaching two screen caps from a Port
of New York Authority New York Harbor railroad facilities map issued about
seventy-five years ago. The first shows the Lackawanna's Brooklyn yards;
the second (at much smaller scale) shows the relative positions of the
Brooklyn yards to Harlem Transfer.
