Subject: How I Spent My Summer Vacation - Reprise 11
"bferr02.jpg" - image/jpeg, 44518 bytes, 863x562 (24bit)

Here is the next in a series of pictures that we took while visiting the southern tier of New
York. Since the Erie and DL&W no longer exist, all we could do is take pictures of the
remaining infrastructure. Some of it is still in use, some not.

The subject of this series of photos are the Erie and DL&W overpasses over Canal Street in Big
Flats. We were looking for the DL&W station which was located between Canal Street and Hammond
Street but it has been moved so we took pictures of the girder plate bridges that were used.
The two ROWs were about 100 yards apart at this point. Further west, by Olcott Road, the two
ROWs are side by side and remain that way until they reach Painted Post where the Rochester
Branch and the DL&W head for Bath and the Erie heads for Gang Mills. Comparing the
construction of the two girder plate bridges, it is obvious that the DL&W one is much more
massive. This attribute also shows up in the construction observed in the Corning area which
will be covered later. BTW: My uncle used to live between the two ROWs so I remember in my
early years playing in the yard and watching trains going both ways on both ROWs at any one
time. It must have been something during the steam era because the yard was nothing but
cinders under the grass.

Flats.
bfdlw02.jpg - This shot details the west end of the overpass.
bfdlw03.jpg - This shot details the underside of the overpass looking west.
bfdlw04.jpg - This shot is looking east from the west end of the overpass. The track is badly
overgrown here indicating little, if any, use.
bfdlw05.jpg - This shot is looking west toward Olcott Road.

Flats.
bferr02.jpg - This shot details the underside of the overpass looking west. Note how much
airier the construction is compared to what is seen in bfdlw03.jpg.
bferr03.jpg - This shot also details the underside of the overpass.
bferr04.jpg - This shot also details the underside of the overpass.
