Subject: DL&W F3 Volunteer -- Tuesday is on
"Tri-State_F3_Scranton_8-11-2010_034_edit.jpg" - image/jpeg, 2513x2242 (24bit)

The weather is holding, and up we go to Scranton on Tuesday. The RSVPs so far have come from the regular F-Troopers, which is enough to finish the important stuff. But I do need to hear from people coming who don't yet have their name tags and the new volunteer tags from the NPS.

Some reminders: Steel toe work boots, appropriate personal protection for the job we're doing and we can't wander around the shop areas not involved in our work.

Some important detail parts will be reunited with 663 tomorrow. The porthole rings and jeweled number board were painted by Tony Traglia at his shop in Duryea, and they're ready. And the last of the new glass will arrive, the cab door window on the fireman's side. And maybe even the stainless kick plates that Ken Capuder has been polishing while convalescing from hip surgery.

In other news, the September 2010 issue of Railfan & Railroad contains its NRHS Convention coverage, and we're in it with favorable copy. The two photos are night shots that show the 664 in the roundhouse and the 663 Gray Ghost with "trainmaster" Kenny Ganz looking like he's about to wake up the crew. Great going, everyone, that Gray Ghost was a hit.

In not so good news, our website domain had a breach of some sort that caused our site and many other rail-history sites to come down. Our great web-master who backs everything up in triplicate will have all of our stuff back on it as soon as he gets the green light.

In the following photos, we're giving a treat to our friends and supporters on the Erielack list who have recently been discussing the spent-water trains out of Drew Chemical in Boonton. And since they haven't seen the progress pictures so far, we'll present them again.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's progress. Wish us luck. ....Mike Del Vecchio

Our F3s 661A and B are heading through Little Falls, N.J., on the Boonton Line, April 30, 1949, with waste-water tank cars carrying SHPX reporting marks head out in the train. Note the two- and three-compartment tank cars next to the F3s. Photo by Johnny Krause. (a steam hunter who actually shot the passing diesels; many did not.)

Below: In this photo of F3 No.621C in the classic Don Ball image from the late 1950s in Jersey City.

Last Wednesday during our fifth straight day of masking and painting, our 663 is looking pretty good in the low, warm afternoon light. Yes, this is a play on the Railfan & Railroad cover.
