days when the F unit sets were semi permanently coupled with a draw bar. The
steam engine tender acted as a compromise car to allow an F unit set missing
one of its A units to be coupled to a train.

These photos are Ron Amberger's Magnum Opus, as they are the best yet seen
of the tender X600 in service and they'll keep his byline alive for as long
as historians study the Lackawanna. The top photo appeared in Sheldon King's
book describing it as being in Tobyhanna during the '55 flo
