Bob and List:

As the ELHS MOW Technical Advisor for the last 20 years,
I have never seen an all-time list that Bob is looking for. I have
bits and pieces of lists from perhaps 20 different sources, but
no comprehensive list. I did see some books in the files which
were in the old Meadville roundhouse about 20 years ago when
they let Schuyler, Larry, myself and one or two others to view
the EL files that were stored there. By chance I picked up a book
which had all the baggae car conversions to MOW. We had very
little time to view these files but I'm sure all the MOW books would
be in these files.

Up to the merger, it was Meadville who assigned MOW numbers
and gave permission to convert cars to MOW purposes. The
Assistant Valuation Engineer issued these authorities. I have
some copies of this correspondence.

Fairly complete lists for plows, flangers, etc are included in my
Diamond articles, as is a list for locomotive cranes and wheel cars.
I'm sure there are lists in these posts if you search. Some older
ORERs contain lists. Some of the Gardner books have lists. All
are only bits and pieces. Of course ELHS has some diagram books.

Regarding idler car 443046, it was on the Binghamton wreck
train in the early 1960's. Attached is a photo. I have seen one
other photo of an Erie six-wheel idler car in a 1940 magazine.

The Erie would convert any damaged or obsolete car to MOW
purposes as long as its running gear was safe. IIRC, they also
converted foreign road cars which were declared complete losses,
assuming of course it was economical and safe to do so.
