Today’s vintage views in Murray Hill are great. I love seeing things in my own backyard as they used to be. This scene in Murray Hill is totally recognizable today.

I took my camera to Murray Hill on a number of occasions and these shots date from December 1976. I was commuting into NY City on the CNJ at that time and occasionally would change it up a bit taking the train from Murray Hill. Back then, there was a pot belly stove in the station which was still in use on cold days. I’m not sure when it was removed, but there is a patch in the middle of the floor that shows exactly where it was – at least the patch was there the last time I was in the station.

If my memory is correct, the station was slated to come down at some point. You can see in these shots that it had been some time since it had seen paint. But it did get painted and the story I heard is that it was just a dedicated individual who stepped up. Can someone either correct me on this or fill in some blanks? It is still a very nice station today even though it suffers from way too much signage.
