Subject: Portage bridge

On 12/5/15 a friend and myself hiked back into Letchworth Park to check out and photograph the bridge from below.
To get there we parked on the north side of the highway bridge in Portageville and took the trail directly across the road.

This trail is on the old Portageville Rd. footprint, the first half of the trail is over what is left, some 40 odd years later, after the road and hillside slipped into the river.
Same reason as the siding on the River line a couple miles south.

Its about a 30 degree grade and then you reach the old road and continue on for about a half mile until intersecting with a gated driveway that leads down to the PRR roadbed. In about a 1/4 mile the woods opens up to a spectacular view of the bridge from below.
Unfortunately, the bridge is so high you can't get even half in the viewfinder.

Another short driveway leads down to the piers and the rivers edge.
A couple of catwalks take you across the main flow to the other side.
From below, one gets a whole new perspective of the bridge.
The details of its construction are very interesting to fans and modelers.
