Subject: An appreciation for the P&D (Gladstone Branch)
"farhills.jpg" - image/jpeg, 2592x1936 (24bit)

Hi folks,

Over the weekend, my wife had to go get fitted for a dress for my sister-in-law's upcoming wedding. I dropped her off at the dress shop in Bedminster, NJ, and I took my two girls to do some "train watching." The nearest spot of "major train activity" was just up the road in Gladstone, so off we went.

It's been quite a while since I've been to Gladstone, and the changes surprised me - a new high-level platform in front of the station, and the freight house is GONE! (when did that come down?). But the tight little yard with the main running through it is still there (but will reportedly be rebuilt in the upcoming year). And the classic DL&W station is still there. After seeing an MU train leave and arrive, I decided we should start exploring the stations on this line within the short timeframe we had available to us. Next up was the Peapack station, which looked remarkably unchanged from DL&W days, and in fact the station still retains its ORIGINAL DL&W STATION SIGN! Wow! It appears to have been a combination station/freight house in Lackawanna days. There's also an industrial customer across the tracks from it, no siding - but did the DL&W/EL ever serve this customer?

Finally, we went to the Far Hills station which was, unlike the other two wood stations, a classic DL&W concrete structure with contrasting coarse aggregate/smooth cement and unique triangular green inlays around the structure. The station is in VERY good maintenance, especially since there is an elegant soup/sandwich restaurant in the east end of the structure. More impressive (to me, at least) was the surviving train order board! I only had my camera phone with me, so I grabbed a quick shot of that (my daughters are looking at the newspaper vending machines directly below the orderboard in the shot). A little bit west of the station is the tiny Far Hills freight station - I assume there was a siding for this structure once? Today, there is a passing siding for the trains on this single track line, and (on weekends at least) there always seems to be a meet scheduled here every hour.

I was just in utter amazement that three classic DL&W stations are in such fine repair (plus a freight house). I think we'll go back another weekend to explore the rest of the stations on this line. Highly recommended, if you want to still get some of that original DL&W "atmosphere" in suburban NJ.

- Paul
