Retirement as it was practiced on the DL&W side in the late 50s at the Syracuse, NY roundhouse- bunting on the engine, etc. This is NOT a Walt Smith foto, but rather one of those that sat around the old roundhouse & was given to me by Bill Laumeister-night foreman there. Mr. Courtney on the left was the 'bull of the woods' -in charge days & the man in glasses was a clerk (I think). The man with the overalls, denim jacket, & cap is, of course, the engineer who's retiring as his wife & grandsons look on.
For Joshua Blay - any ideas who the engr. is????????
The engine looks like an Alco, an S-2 perhaps, although I know they used some old high hood Alco switchers up there too. Mr. Courtney said to me once,"We get all the junk up here after they wear it out on the mainline".

Regards,
Walter Smith
