"EL_Scan-2.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1200x811 (256c)

I had found the attached photo taken by Richard Schilling and had always thought that it might be a freight in the hole at Groveland (the wye track going off to the right) being passed by the remnant of the Phoebe Snow #32. In contacted Steve Loitsch, who's dad went out with Mr. Schilling and had taken this photo. He scanned the original print for me attached, and the caption the back says: "Frt Passed by #1" "6/24/65" With this date it can't be Groveland or anything on the former Lackawanna Buffalo Division, because the line was severed between Wayland and Groveland in the fall of 1963. Can anyone identify this shot of a westbound #1 passing a freight in a siding, with a diverging track off to the right, and the very prevalent Lackawanna Signals???

Steve, I would appreciate a upgraded scan, and did the caption have a location like Groveland? Or somewhere else in NY State? DMV On September 21, 2016 7:58:45 AM EDT, Steve Loitsch wrote:
David,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but my work/family schedule has been crazy lately. I have been looking for the actual print from Dad's collection and found it last night. The photo was taken by the late Richard (Rick) Schilling. The caption on the back only says freight train passed by #1 and the date, 6/24/65. Dad had said Rick rode the Phoebe Snow and that these and a couple of other prints were from that trip. I can send you a better scan if you would like. I really wish I could give you more information about this shot, but that is the best I can do.

Steve: Attached please find the photo in question. I believe this to taken from an eastbound EL passenger train on the former Lackawanna Buffalo Division at Groveland, NY passing the Groveland pushers, or it’s a westbound train in the siding, with the west leg of the Groveland wye showing. I believe it to be 1961-62, because the merger was in Oct. 1960 and this F unit is already painted EL black & yellow, and the passenger trains only lasted until June 30, 1962 on the Lackawanna’s Buffalo Division. I’d appreciate any input and I would also like to know if you may have any other images of the EL (Lackawanna’s) Buffalo Division that may have been taken on the same trip?

Hi David,
I’d be more
than happy to share the photo. Just for information though, I did not take it, depending in the photo it was either by my Father or his now deceased railfan partner, Rick Schilling both from the Bronx. I now have Dad’s photo collection and what Dad had of Rick’s collection was included there as well. I’ll do my best to assist in any way including sending along a better quality scan if you would like.
Steve

Message: Hello Steve, I have a photo of yours that I had found on the net; I believe that it is taken from a coach on an EL train that is eastbound in the summer of 1961-62? through I believe Groveland, NY with an EL painted yellow & black F unit in the siding. I am doing a program at the ELHS meet in Mount Morris, NY on Sept 17th and I would like to first of all affirm my guess at the location, and 2nd request your permission to use this shot in my program. If you would send me an email to: David@gvtrail.com I will send you the photo in question. David J. Monte Verde 716 474-2014
