"EM4084.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1000x750 (24bit)

[Mon, 26 Sep 2011 From: "Gary R. Kazin" I cycled this recently with my son.
It's a nice ride...We also went out on the pier, which reaches almost
halfway across the Hudson."]

Gary, I'm glad you and your son enjoyed the ride. Since we live just 20
minutes from this pier, my wife and I head over for frequent walks, both for
the great view out in the river as well as for the sense of history.
Remember, this pier (actually a landfill plus pilings) was built by the
Erie. It was the eastern terminus until the JC connections were made. Daniel
Webster and party sailed up the Hudson from NYC to this pier to make that
famous first ride over the Erie with Webster in his rocker on the flat car.
At low tide there are still some dramatic vestiges of the wood substructures
that make themselves very visible.
