Subject: Scranton this weekend
"DSC_8418_resize.jpg" - image/jpeg, 902x600 (24bit)

Hi folks,

I'm surprised no one has submitted a report on this yet, so here's my quick summary...

This weekend was the DL&WRRHS meeting in Scranton, PA. It was held at the Steamtown theatre. There were several excellent presentations, including a very thorough overview of DL&W Pacifics by Jerry Segrue and the highlight of the day, a talking presentation by Tom T. Taber III. For someone who's 80 years old, Tom is very energetic and can talk a lot! :) He regaled us with his background, many stories of the DL&W ("Here's how not to get thrown off railroad property: KEEP MOVING!") and growing up as basically part of a DL&W local crew, and took a decent Q&A session after he was complete.

Additionally, there was a tour of the Scranton Diesel shop led by a Park Ranger and former DL&W employee Ed Ratchford (did I get that name right?), where Ed pointed out how the shop building actually was built out over the years as more and more diesels came onto the property. Absolutely delightful!

Attached are some photos from that day (apologies for some of the outdoor shots, it was very cloudy later in the day)

8365: Bridge 60 tower in glorious sun!
8382: DL&W 565 undergoing cosmetic restoration
8385: The 565's tender - needs paint and new lettering!
8402: Ed Ratchford (center) leads the diesel shop tour
8415: Restored DL&W caboose 889 in the yard
8417: Former DL&W milk car in a modified state
8418: Detail of a DL&W MU pantograph - anyone know where I can get one of these in HO scale TODAY?
8438: Two of the most influential writers for our favorite roads: Tom T. Taber III (left) and William S. Young (right) chat after the meeting
8453: A typical DL&W 2-aspect/2-head signal, turned away from the track, still stands immediately west of Bridge 60. Note the lower aspect of the top head is plated over, very commonly seen on DL&W signals as trackage was simplified.

It was also nice to meet fellow lister Lou Schultheis - Hi Lou!

- Paul
