Frank & List,

The next article I came to after your post was about the big grain shipments
to Russia, Feb 17, 1964. Some of my contacts at the Marine Museum stated
that the ships from Europe would go directly to Duluth, load up on grain,
and return to Europe through the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway. This
new traffic pattern helped kill the grain industry in Buffalo. These
shipments to Russia apparantly helped empty the elevarors in Buffalo, and
perhaps that is why the ICC allowed "Unit" trains to bring moren grain in.

The EL didn't start building their big grain hoppers until 1964, after the
ICC allowed "unit" trains. They built 50 in 1964, 25 in 1965, and 100 in
1966; and 50 in 1967.

Ron Dukarm.
