I've got two pictures to share with the group. Both come from just
about the same era. The first is the Newfoundland Station in its
Susquehenna colors. I took this picture 40 years ago in October of
1962. Hard to believe so much time has passed. My father bought
a new car that year, the '62 Chevy in the picture and the whole
family was going out on trips around Sussex County. I would set
the route and my father would drive. I got to see the recently
abandoned L&NE and other railroads. One time up by Unionville,
NY we stumbled on the NYS&W Hanford branch. I was always
trying to find Van Sykles. Didn't ever find much there. One time
while out in Warren County we were following some secondary
route and wound up on the bridge just east of the Blairstown
railroad station. There it was with its train order boards waiting for
passenger trains.

On our way home from one of those trips I persuaded him to stop
in Newfoundland to take a picture of the station. It had been
closed for about a year at this time. The rods controlling the
semaphore signals once on the opposite side of the track were still
in place. Newfoundland had what appeared to be a wooden train
order mast painted white. I saw that around 1960.

The station was closed at this time with the "Railway Express
Agency" signs removed and placed in the baggage station. Even
though not used no windows were broke. I thought I would take the
picture because I thought the building would soon be vandalized or
torn down. This station along with the L&HR Great
Meadows/Vienna station would be great models to market.

The second picture was taken in 1963. It is the Sussex station of
the L&NE. It had a classic porcelain and metal "Sussex" sign over
the L&NE fried egg logo. I hope that sign was preserved. Again
this station had been unused for about a year but was still in great
shape. All of the desks and chairs were still in place. The building
looked like it was closed up but never cleaned out. I think the pot
belly stove was still in place.
