Subject: Roseville Tunnel doings
"Cutoff_by_Wolf_Lake.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1356x908 (24bit)

Yesterday, I took a ride to see what was happening on the Cutoff. Thinking
that it was one big construction zone, I bypassed Landing and headed for
Roseville Tunnel. My first stop was near Wolf Lake where I climbed the
embankment only to find a peaceful scene with rotting ties. I have to say
the embankment seemed much steeper than when I made my last visit 35 years
ago.

Continuing west on Roseville Road, I passed over the cutoff on the one lane
bridge, parked and began walking back along the ROW to the tunnel. Here I
did find some work going on. Two geologists were there assessing the
stability of the tunnel. I continued through the tunnel before retracing my
steps.

Long ago, I had been told me that Roseville Tunnel was the result of the
rock being found to be so hard. But the geologists corrected me on this. In
fact they said, the rock around Roseville is quite unstable and the
engineers of the time did not want a deep cut because of the danger of
falling rock. There is a small section in the tunnel with a concrete liner
and I was told there is a fault line running right across the tunnel at that
point.

But given that there is such a deep and impressive cut west of the tunnel, I
still find it strange that the solution of the day was a tunnel.
