Per Bob Bahrs' request, here is some addition information (and photos!) from Steve Hepler about the three former DL&W SW-1s that Virginia Blue Ridge got.

Checking the "EL Survivors" page, EL 352 is still the UTLX shop switcher in Marion, and EL 354 is still the UTLX shop switcher in Valdosta, GA.

Paul,

I saw Bob Bahrs' question on the EL site asking if VBR 12 is still around.

To the best of my knowledge, yes...it is. The loco arrived at the VBR on June 7, 1965, and worked there for nine years until it was in need of a rebuild.

In 1974, No. 12 was overhauled by Railway Supply Company in Birmingham, Alabama in exchange for a trade-in of VBR 11 (ex-EL No. 349, ex-DL&W 427).

No. 11 was found to be a very unreliable engine on the VBR. After the trade-in, No. 11 was later sold to the Kaiser Chemical Company in Bainbridge, Georgia where it became the plant switcher. As far as I can tell the unit has been scrapped.

No. 12 returned to the VBR in early 1974 and continued to work the line, along with VBR 10 (ex-EL 352, ex-DL&W 430) until the railroad shut down in 1980. Nos. 10 & 12 were sold to the Union Tank Car Company in 1985. No. 10 became UTLX 12226 and still (?) works the UTLX yard in Marion, Ohio. No. 12 became UTLX 12227 and is in operation (?) at the UTLX facility in Valdosta, Georgia.

An image of former VBR 12 in UTLX blue is attached. Sorry it's not the best. I'm not all that sure on how current this information is.

I'm also sending images of VBR 10 & 11 as well. They arrived on the VBR on June 18, 1963. The began service on the VBR on August 2, 1963. The last steam engine to pull freight on the VBR was 0-6-0 No. 9 (now at the SMS Lines in South Jersey) on August 1, 1963.

Steve
