True enough, but anthracite needed the air flowing around it
in ways that, say, bituminous did not. That's why anthracite
was a tough sell at the beginning, and later required things
like Wooten Fireboxes and in home furnaces damper regulators
that actually regulated the burning.

An anthracite furnace actually burned continuously, but the
speed of the burning was regulated by how much air was
permitted across the great and through the retort.

Here/s a photo of such a regulator -- two arms, one for the
ash pit damper and one for the check damper. There would be
weights attached to help balance these.

We'll keep this on topic by noting the source of the
regulator .

(and, yes, I take an utterly catholic view of "DL&W" even as
others do not share the theology ]
